Holt on target for 20
December 4, 2009 in News, Norwich City FC by H!WSaG!
Grant Holt’s brace against Southend United on Tuesday night took his tally to 18 in all competitions this season, and should he hit the 20 mark before Christmas then he will be the first player to do so for more than 40 years
Their are three league matches and a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Southampton to go before Christmas, and the City skipper could become the first Canary since Hugh Curran in the 1968-69 season to hit the 20 mark.
Holt has yet to appear for City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, but even if he does not play in the area semi-final against Southampton then he has league games against Oldham, Yeovil and Huddersfield in which to match Curran’s feat.
The last City player to come close to the half season 20 goal mark was Ted MacDougall, who had 19 in the bag by mid-December 1975, 15 of which had come by the end of September, and MacDougall finished the season with 28 in all competitions.
And at his current rate of progress, even Terry Allcock’s club record of 37 goals in all competitions in 1962-63 may not be safe.
