Robbie Cowling, Colchester United chairman, has got his soap box out again and is urging the football authorities to make an example of Norwich City, after the two clubs failed to agree on a compensation package for Paul Lambert.
As reported last week, Colchester have elected to take Norwich to a Football League tribunal and have reported them for a breach of league regulations and misconduct after a compensation package with Norwich was unable to be agreed following the departure of former manager Lambert, along with his assistants Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa, in August.
The Football League will now set up a Football Disciplinary Commission to hear Colchester’s complaint against all four parties, with a tribunal likely to take place in the New Year, which Colchester appear to be hoping will lead to them being awarded substantial compensation, possibly running into seven figures, or even the Canaries being deduced points.
Cowling insists he wants the Football League to make an example of Norwich, for the good of the game, and has stated “There are two key issues for us.”
“The first is that Colchester United need to be compensated for what has happened.
“The second is that football has to sort itself out a bit and this is a chance for the authorities to do that and set an example.
Cowling added that he had hoped the matter could have been settled between the two clubs, rather than go to an independent panel and has commented that he wanted to go to Paul Lambert with the idea of a money plus players agreement.
We weren’t going to comment on this story again, as not having the full facts in front of us makes it difficult to remark on the situation especially as it only seems to be Mr Cowling who is producing a blow by blow commentary!
However, Norwich City will no doubt have consulted with their legal team in great depth over this situation, and if there was a real cause for compensation then I am sure the matter would have been concluded by now.
Obviously, it appears that the two Clubs valuation of any compensation package differs significantly, and as Cowling has stated that he wanted to go to PL with the idea of a money plus players agreement it would appear the Colchester Chairman is after every ounce of flesh he can lay his hands on.
It isn’t that surprising however that Cowling feels he and his club have been served another portion of injustice. This isn’t the first time that its happened and it must hurt that yet another manager has seen the light and ‘moved’ away, maybe that’s what really hurts?
Perhaps Mr Cowling ought to take a long hard look at his Club and reflect on why this is the third time it has happened, with even George Burely deciding that a move across the county border would be a better managerial career move than staying with The U’s.
Maybe your club isnt as big as you would like to think Mr Cowling, and maybe despite your clubs 7-1 mauling of the Canaries on the opening day of the season you know deep down that unless Norwich receive a points deduction they will be pushing you all the way for an automatic promotion spot come May.
Just one final thing though, your protestations are getting boring! Put your soap box away and let the Football League decide on any punishment. Get back to supporting your current manager before you find another one has slipped out through the managerial turnstile
