Match Report – Southampton 2 – 2 Norwich City

November 22, 2009 in Match Report, Norwich City FC by Nelson's Revenge

SouthamptonCity boss Paul Lambert was able to name an unchanged starting eleven following the 2-0 victory over Tranmere last weekend, with Jon Otsemobor making his 100th appearance for the Canaries. Josh Dawkin’s inclusion on the substitutes bench was the only change to the squad of 18 with the 17 year old replacing Jamie Cureton.

Southampton manager Alan Pardew kept faith with the eleven who started last Sunday’s home game against Brighton, despite the surprise 3-1 defeat and Saints were led by new captain Dean Hammond, who was part of Paul Lambert’s Colchester team when they won 7-1 at Carrow Road on the opening day of the season before his move to the South Coast.

The Canaries were second best for most of the first half and trailed at the interval to an early goal from Adam Lallana after Hoolahan, under pressure, played a poor square pass that was intercepted by Connolly and the striker’s well judged through ball enabled Lallana to advance and beat Forster with a low drive just inside the post.

A pulsating second half played in torrential rain and an improved City display saw Wes Hoolahan score his ninth of the season and cancel out Saints lead nine minutes after the break, scoring from the rebound after his penalty had been saved by Kelvin Davis.

A superb David Connolly goal restored Southampton’s lead in the 64th minute after Lallana found Connolly and he cut inside before curling a superb right foot shot beyond Forster into the top corner.

City’s double substitution with 18 minutes left with Hughes and McDonald replacing Lappin and Hoolahan, paid immediate dividends when Hughes equalised within three minutes of coming on.

Martin’s long range effort had been saved by Davis but he couldn’t hold on, and Hughes was first to the rebound to slide the ball home, which saw Lamberts men return to Norfolk after picking up a well deserved point.
