City’s progression to the next round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy was decided on penalties last evening after 90 minutes of uninspiring action failed to separate Norwich and Swindon at the County Ground.
A travelling support of 848 supporters saw Paul Lambert make nine changes to his side, with only Michael Nelson and Jens Berthel Askou named from the eleven who started the FA Cup fixture at Paulton at the weekend.
Jon Otsemobor returned at right-back, whilst Fraser Forster returned in goal at the expense of Declan Rudd and Paul Lambert handed Josh Dawkin his first senior start for the Canaries.
Cody McDonald and Jamie Cureton were paired in attack, and it was Cureton who provided City’s first real attempt in the 15th minutes when he volleyed over from close range after Michael Nelson had headed on from a Paul McVeigh corner.
McDonald brought goalkeeper Phil Smith into action after 20 minutes when he harried Greer and his low shot was blocked at close range, and both he and Cureton were in the wars in the early stages of the first half with Cureton needing treatment after landing awkwardly on his back.
It was a first half short of any clear cut chances and whilst Fraser Forster was called into action on a number of occasions it was generally unexciting stuff.
City’s attacking pairing might have produced a breakthrough in the 57thminute when McVeigh’s corner was met by the McDonald’s header, but it was straight at Smith.
City youngster, Dario Dumic was handed his senior debut by Paul Lambert in the 57thwhen he replaced Jon Otsemobor, and Hughes replaced McVeigh 5 minutes later.
A number of chances fell the way of both sides in the final 15 minutes, but none of them provided the all elusive goal and the deadlock failed to be broken.
With the result and subsequent place in the Semi Final to be decided by penalties, it was Fraser Forster who proved to be the Canaries hero after he saved Swindon’s fourth penalty, which left Jamie Cureton to complete a perfect five out of five for City.
Owain Tudur Jones, Stephen Hughes, Michael Nelson and Jens Berthel Askou also scored from the spot as City moved within two rounds of a trip to Wembley for the final.
