Match Report – Paulton Rovers 0 – 7 Norwich City

November 8, 2009 in Match Report, Norwich City FC by Nelson's Revenge

Chris MartinPaul Lambert’s side eased through their FA Cup First Round fixture against non-league Paulton Rovers, with goals from Grant Holt, Wes Hoolahan and four from Chris Martin sinking their gallant hosts, despite a energetic 2070 support and a television audience willing another FA Cup giantkilling.

Lamberts side looked nervous in the opening quarter of an hour and the non-league minnows had Norwich rattled early on and twice went close in the opening 10 minutes, first through James Tyrell’s delicate lob and Robbie Claridge’s double effort from the resulting corner.

City nerves were settled and the home crowd silenced in the 16th minute when Holt popped up at the back post to expertly head past Kyle Phillips after Wes Hoolahan had set Korey Smith away down the right and his floated cross was met by the head of Holt.

Martin doubled the advantage eight minutes later with a cool finish from the edge of the area after being slickly put through by Hoolahan, and although the home side huffed and puffed after that, Holt effectively ended the tie, thumping Simon Lappin’s corner through Phillips.

Paulton wasted a golden opportunity to pull a goal back five minutes later when Claridge fired over after a poor clearance by goalkeeper Declan Rudd and the miss was in the 43rd minute when Holt made it 3 for City with an unmarked head.

Rovers should have hit back 13 minutes after the break but Ollie Price’s back post header was directed straight at Rudd.

Holt and Lappin’s indiscipline earned second half bookings, a fifth for the season in each case, which conveniently handed both players a one game suspension for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at Swindon on Tuesday evening and avoiding either missing any League One action.

The impressive Hoolahan scored the goal of the game with a left footed curler in the 74th minute, before Martin took center stage finding the net three times in the last 13 minutes, the pick of which was a curling free kick from the edge of the box, as the Canaries reached the second round in style.
