Match Preview – Stockport County v Norwich City
October 30, 2009 in Match Preview, Norwich City FC by Nelson's Revenge
Paul Lambert has a major headache ahead of City’s trip to Stockport County after admitting that none of his three right backs are likely to be fit for the fixture. The manager is without Jon Otsemobor, Michael Spillane and George Francomb who are all sidelined by injury, and has no option but to find a short term alternative for tomorrow’s game at Edgeley Park.
However, the City boss is reluctant to switch Korey Smith, who filled in at right-back for most of the second half against Swindon, to the defensive role confirming he is too valuable in his preferred role in midfield.
Attempts to make a loan signing have failed, and the only other options available would include switching Russell, Doherty, Askou to right back, all of whom have played in the position before, with the most recent being Askou who finished the Swindon game in that position.
Midfielder Stephen Hughes is also a major doubt after failing to recover from the thigh strain that sidelined him last weekend, whilst Luke Daley is also doubtful after picking up a thigh strain
Any back four reshuffle will depend on whether Matthew Gill is ready to start the match, and the midfielder is making strides in his recovery, along with his fellow midfielder, Owain Tudur Jones.
Both men played the full 90 minutes at Portman Road during the week and Lambert admitted that Gill is ahead of Tudur Jones in getting minutes on the field under his belt.
Whilst problems abound on the right side of defence, Adam Drury is preparing to make his 300th senior appearance for the club this weekend and has yet to miss a league match this season.
The Canaries face Stockport, with whom they have never shared a goalless draw, in fifth place in the League One table, whilst County are fifth from bottom and have one just once in their last seven fixtures.
Gary Ablett’s side are set to welcome back winger Carl Baker for their match against City, after he missed County’s 2-0 defeat against Brentford with a calf injury, but the midfielder has now recovered and is set to return to the side.
Boss Gary Ablett has no other injury concerns apart from long-term injury absentee Matty Mainwaring, who has a broken leg and will not return this year.
