Match Report – Millwall 1 – 2 Norwich City

February 7, 2010 in Match Report, Norwich City Football Club by Gus Honeywood

Goals from Tony Craig and Neil Harris saw Millwall come from behind to beat leaders Norwich 2-1 at the New Den.

Canaries academy product Chris Martin opened the scoring after just four minutes with a low curling free-kick from 23 yards, firing in his 13th league goal of the season.

Parity was restored when full-back Craig’s low shot from the left side of the penalty area found its way past the helpless Fraser Forster after 25 minutes, sending the home support into raptures.

Norwich right-back Russell Martin almost scored a wonder goal just minutes before the interval, producing a mesmerising run from his own half into the Lions penalty area before firing wide.

Kenny Jackett’s half-time reshuffle worked a treat as substitute Harris headed home Chris Hackett’s cross following a well-worked short corner to give the Lions the lead six minutes after the restart.

Millwall skipper Paul Robinson posed a threat from set-pieces all day, rising above the Norwich defence to head over Hackett’s floated free kick after 64 minutes.

Hackett then went close himself moments later with a stinging drive from 30 yards that whistled over Forster’s crossbar.

Forster showed why there is so much reported interest in his services with an instinctive one-handed stop to prevent Ipswich loanee Liam Trotter’s deflected volley from extending the lead.

Defeat was Norwich`s first in 17 games but they stay top as a result of Leeds` 2-2 draw at Hartlepool.

Match Preview – Millwall v Norwich City

Millwall will be without Dave Martin for the clash with high-flying Norwich at The Den.

The winger missed out on a deadline-day switch to Derby but is expected to join the Rams on loan next week with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

Boss Kenny Jackett has therefore confirmed he will not feature in the squad, so Lewis Grabban could be in line to start.

Defender Andy Frampton could return after three weeks out with a calf injury.

Record goalscorer Neil Harris was on the bench for last weekend’s win at Brighton following a groin strain and should figure again, although Shaun Batt and Steve Morison will start up front.

Fellow striker Gary Alexander (heel) is still missing.

Norwich manager Paul Lambert has an unchanged squad to choose from.

Left-back Adam Drury missed last weekend’s 2-1 win over Hartlepool with a thigh injury which continues to trouble him so new signing Michael Rose will continue.

Rose scored the winner last time out on his debut after signing from Stockport and will carry on at full-back, while captain Grant Holt is again absent.

Holt will sit out the third and final game of his suspension at the New Den so Cody McDonald is likely to continue in attack after scoring in his last two games.

Defenders Michael Spillane (hamstring) and Jens Berthel Askou (foot) both came through 45 minutes of a reserve game in midweek but are not ready for a return to the first-team just yet.

Match Report – Norwich City 2 – 0 Millwall

Wes Hoolahan turned in a virtuoso performance as Norwich made it eight straight home wins, two short of their all-time club record, with a 2-0 victory over Millwall.

Hoolahan scored his 13th goal of the season in the first half and then set up Grant Holt with a brilliant piece of vision in the second to settle a keenly contested encounter.

The Canaries found themselves on the back foot in the early stages, with goalkeeper Fraser Forster saving well from Danny Schofield in the opening minute.

But they gradually got a foothold in the game and Chris Martin saw a goal disallowed for offside before Hoolahan’s opener in the 28th minute.

Defender Jon Otsemobor did well to get past Schofield on the right before delivering an inch-perfect low cross which Hoolahan side-footed home from 10 yards out.

A quiet second half came to life in the 68th minute when Norwich scored their second. After Millwall had casually given away possession, Martin played in the overlapping Hoolahan and he picked out Holt at the back post with a glorious cross which was simply begging to be headed into the back of the net.

Holt’s 20th goal of the season knocked the stuffing out of the Lions although substitute Jason Price came close to pulling a goal back late on.

Match Preview – Norwich City v Millwall

Norwich will be without first-choice defensive partnership Gary Doherty and Jens Berthel Askou for the Boxing Day visit of Millwall.

Doherty, who has scored in his last three appearances – picked up his fifth booking of the season against Huddersfield last weekend and will miss out through a one-match suspension.

Askou is still out with the foot injury which forced him to miss the 3-0 win over the Terriers so Michael Nelson is the only fit centre-half at Carrow Road.

One contender to fill in, Michael Spillane, remains sidelined with a hamstring injury so Russell Martin could move across from full-back to deputise.

Korey Smith is also out with a thigh problem so Tom Adeyemi will continue in midfield and Declan Rudd (knee), Luke Daley (thigh) and Owain Tudur Jones (groin) are all out.

Millwall duo David Martin and Jack Smith will miss out through suspension.

The pair have both collected five yellow cards this season and will serve one-match bans.

Scott Barron is likely to replace Smith, with knee injury victim Chris Hackett hopeful of shaking off his problem to come in and cover Martin’s absence.

Manager Kenny Jackett has had some good news from the FA disciplinary board, though, with French midfielder Jimmy Abdou having his red card against Charlton last weekend overturned on appeal.

Former Liverpool defender Zak Whitbread, who continues to be linked with a January move away from the club, will again miss out with a hip injury.
